MTE's Involvement
MTE is proud to be serving as the prime consultant on this project, managing a multidisciplinary team that includes MTE’s civil, geotechnical, structural, environmental, and surveying services, as well as external mechanical, electrical, and architectural consultants.
Our role as prime consultant includes:
- Liaising with BWXT representatives to establish budget, scope, and schedule
- Supporting the contractor selection process
- Securing approvals, including site plan and building permits
- Overseeing coordination of design and construction activities across all disciplines
BWXT has operated on this site for over 160 years. The limited property size added complexity when determining optimal locations for the additions, particularly with respect to parking, truck turning movements, setbacks and landscaping.
The expansion features 60-foot clear ceiling heights and new production capabilities, presenting distinctive structural design challenges. The new building extensions compensate for the skewed orientation of the existing buildings, and the new production systems are designed to seamlessly transition with existing configurations.
In addition, coordinating code compliance for exiting and other safety requirements required close collaboration among multiple disciplines and with city officials.
By expanding BWXT’s production capabilities, the new expansion is anticipated to create new opportunities, both for BWXT and for the Cambridge community.
This project reflects both the innovation and complexity of modern industrial design — and MTE is proud to support BWXT in delivering a facility designed to meet increased global interest and investment in nuclear energy.
