The new refinery will be the largest in Canada, with an expected future annual refining capacity of 1 million metric tonnes. Sucro Can’s focus on improving its customers’ supply chains is one of the keys to its success, and a key reason for choosing the Port of Hamilton as the location for its new refinery.
This new facility in Hamilton is more than a mere sugar refinery; it is a strategic catalyst for Ontario’s economy, with a projected $1-billion economic impact.

This project is the first of its kind for the City of Kitchener, marking a milestone with the use of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). IPD is a collaborative approach that brings together people, systems, and practices to maximize efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize results across all phases of design, fabrication, and construction.
As an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) team partner, MTE is proud to provide structural engineering design services for this innovative facility. Featuring a FIFA-sized turf field, aquatics center, walking track, cricket batting cage, and more, it is poised to become Kitchener’s premier indoor recreation destination. Each resident will benefit from a support network, which includes medical services and assistance in navigating various community systems. To enhance inclusivity, 26% of the units will be designed for full wheelchair accessibility. Rental costs will be affordable and income-based, ensuring that those who require our services the most can access them.
