Senior Ecologist | Environmental Engineering

Are you an environmental professional looking to lead meaningful projects that protect ecosystems, support responsible development, and help clients navigate complex environmental regulations? We are currently seeking a Senior Ecologist to join our Environmental Division and work out of our London, Burlington or Kitchener offices.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior technical review and reporting on natural environment topics and potential impacts of development for submission to regulatory agencies.
  • Apply relevant environmental policies and criteria to aquatic and/or terrestrial systems, obtain permits and authorizations (e.g., Fisheries Act, ESA), and recommend best practices, mitigation measures, and compensation strategies.
  • Lead proposal development and participate in business development activities related to environmental services.
  • Manage and coordinate projects to ensure timely delivery, budget adherence, and alignment with client expectations and MTE quality standards.
  • Plan and oversee field programs including aquatic (e.g., fish surveys, aquatic habitat assessments, HDFAs) and/or terrestrial (e.g., vegetation surveys, wildlife inventories, wetland assessments) components.
  • Analyze field data to support baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, Species at Risk permitting, and habitat restoration and monitoring.
  • Liaise with clients, regulatory agencies (e.g., DFO, MECP), Indigenous communities, stakeholders, and other consultants.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff within project teams, supporting their development through field training, report review, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned.

Requirements

  • University degree in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or related discipline (technical diploma with strong experience may be considered).
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience including standardized surveys (e.g. electrofishing, wetland delineation) with advanced knowledge in at least one specialized discipline (e.g. fisheries biology, ecological restoration, wetland ecology, SAR).
  • Expertise in aquatic and/or terrestrial ecology, including strong taxonomic skills, habitat assessment, restoration techniques, and field methods relevant to Southern Ontario.
  • Proven success in project management; PMP designation is an asset.
  • Exceptional technical writing and senior-level review capabilities.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with clients, agencies, and stakeholders.
  • In-depth knowledge of municipal, provincial, and federal environmental policies and legislation (e.g., Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act, Planning Act, Conservation Authorities Act, Provincial Policy Statements).
  • Experience conducting natural heritage impact assessments and developing mitigation and compensation plans.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff within project teams, including field training and technical review.
  • Experience with stakeholder sessions, public meetings, and regulatory hearings, as well as a qualified expert witness is an asset.
