MTE Consultants Acquires RIZZ Engineering, Strengthening Expertise in Structural Design and Precast Concrete

12 Days of Christmas: 3 Surveys

On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me… three surveys!

Our surveyors bring extensive training and experience, enabling our survey team to deliver a range of legal and engineering surveying services to our clients in Kitchener, London, Stratford, Burlington, Toronto, and surrounding areas.

Why is our Survey team so important?

Surveying is essential because it provides the precise measurements and data necessary for the design, construction, and maintenance of buildings, infrastructure, and land development projects

It ensures that structures are built in the right location, at the right elevation, and in compliance with zoning laws and environmental regulations. Without accurate surveys, projects can encounter costly delays, safety issues, or even legal challenges.

Here are three standout projects that highlight the exceptional work of our survey team:

Region of Waterloo International Airport

The Region of Waterloo International Airport (YKF) is a full-service airport located in Southern Ontario, supporting commercial, corporate, and general aviation.

It is also home to the Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre and is one of the largest professional flight training schools in Canada. Additionally, one of only two operational Avro Lancaster aircraft in the world is equipped with advanced avionics by the Mid-Canada Mod Center. YKF is also a significant hub for Flair Airlines, serving as one of their largest Canadian bases.

MTE provided surveying services for the parking lot layout, along with environmental, civil, and structural engineering services to the development of the Waterloo International Airport.

Northfield Business Park

MTE provided survey services for the Northfield Business Park in Waterloo, supporting both its design and construction phases. Our work included site surveys to facilitate the development of the 37.5-ha site, which features four office buildings, three parking structures, and a roundabout. Later, we prepared Surveyor’s Real Property Reports (SRPR) for over 20 BlackBerry properties, including the Northfield Business Park buildings, to support the sale of the portfolio. MTE is currently preparing reference plans and easement plans for Perimeter Development as it develops the final phases of the Business Park. MTE also provided civil and structural engineering services to the Northfield Business Park.

Grand River Fairway Road Bridge

In 2012 the Region of Waterloo completed the development of a new bridge that linked Kitchener’s east and Cambridge’s north sections. Construction of the bridge is considered an engineering accomplishment as it was built with a technique not used in Ontario for over 20 years. It is also the first brand-new span bridge over the Grand River in Waterloo Region since 1963.

As a member of the construction team, MTE was retained to provide Construction Layout surveying services for the project. MTE’s scope included layout of 2 km of road, a culvert crossing Randal Creek and two roundabouts. The bridge decks span 247 m of land and water and are 20 m above the river. MTE played a pivotal role in this construction method by laying out all the critical components and providing the bridge’s engineer with strict measurements of the horizontal and vertical elevations. This was essential for ensuring that the two sections joined together correctly in the middle.

MTE’s Survey team used survey grade GPS for control establishment and some of the layout on the roads. A high precision total station and digital level were used to layout and collect precise information on the bridge. This was necessary due to the tight design tolerance. With this equipment MTE was able to constantly measure horizontally and vertically to the millimeter.
