Project overview

Sitting along the Avon River in Stratford, Ontario, this 77,000 sq. ft. theatre blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings with a sleek, curving façade that reflects the flow of the water. The design is all about movement and connection—open, airy spaces that flow into one another, creating natural gathering spots and quiet corners to explore. Floor-to-ceiling views of the river and surrounding gardens make the indoors feel like an extension of the landscape. Designed to meet LEED Gold standards, the building doesn’t just look good—it’s built with sustainability in mind too.

Acoustics were a key focus in the design of the new facility. Double-glazed curtainwall panels help keep outside noise from disrupting the experience inside. In the lobby, forum, and café, a wood-slat ceiling not only adds warmth and style—it also hides acoustic materials that create a comfortable, intimate sound environment, making it easy for patrons to talk and connect.

MTE's Involvement

MTE was proud to support the development of the Tom Patterson Theatre in Stratford, Ontario, by delivering a suite of multidisciplinary engineering services—including surveying, geotechnical, environmental, civil, structural, and building science expertise.

Our involvement began with our Survey team preparing a detailed reference plan for the site. Simultaneously, our Geotechnical team conducted materials testing and environmental testing to assess site conditions and ensure safe, sustainable development.

To support the project’s LEED certification goals, our Indoor Environments team performed Indoor Air Quality Sampling in line with LEED Credit IEQ 3.2 requirements and carried out risk assessments to promote a healthy indoor environment for occupants.

Given the site’s proximity to the Avon River, our Civil team developed a site plan that included floodplain mapping and analysis to ensure the theatre’s location would not be impacted by potential flooding. The team also designed and coordinated the relocation of a municipal sanitary sewer to accommodate the new development.

Our Environmental team led multi-phase environmental site assessments and designated substance audits and also provided hydrogeological consulting services to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and minimize the project’s environmental impact.

More recently, our Structural team provided the structural design of RTU Safety Frames required for the Theatre.

This collaboration of disciplines across MTE highlights our ability to deliver integrated solutions that support complex projects.
