Project overview

Located in the Gaslight District in West Galt, Tapestry Hall is a striking example of architectural revival. Originally constructed in the 1800s, the building once housed the Dumfries Foundry—an industrial building that produced manufacturing equipment for over a century until its closure in 1987. Today, it stands as a beautifully restored heritage site and a premier event venue that brings the Cambridge community together to celebrate its rich past, vibrant present, and evolving future.

Rather than demolishing the historic structure, the new owners recognized the value of its industrial character and undertook a restoration that honors the building’s legacy while reimagining its purpose. The 250,000-square-foot facility was rehabilitated to maintain its original integrity, while transforming it into a modern space suited for large-scale events.

MTE's Involvement

MTE was proud to be part of this revitalization, providing structural engineering services throughout the project. Our team led the design for extensive repairs and renovations to the original structure, as well as the design of key new components that bring the venue into the modern era. This work was recognized with an ACEC Grand River Chapter Award of Merit.

The completed venue is both functional and stunning. Designed to accommodate 650 seated guests or over 1,100 standing, Tapestry Hall now features a fully equipped commercial kitchen, bar, bridal lounge, stage, 20-foot-wide video screen, and a striking art installation at the main entrance. Just steps from the Grand River, the hall breathes new life into a once-overlooked area, transforming it into a destination that celebrates Cambridge’s architectural and industrial heritage.

Our involvement focused on the structural transformation of the building shell through a combination of reinforcement, repair, and modernization. This included designing and specifying new stairs, an elevator, a pedestrian bridge, utility rooms, and a mezzanine level. We also oversaw modifications to doors and windows, relocation of masonry arches, roof reinforcement, and restoration of existing masonry throughout the structure.

Contract administration and regular site inspections ensured that all work was executed in accordance with the approved design, maintaining structural integrity while meeting modern code requirements.

Restoring a historic building of this scale presented unique challenges. The team had to navigate the complexity of integrating modern systems into a 19th-century structure, often encountering unforeseen conditions hidden beneath layers of previous renovations. Balancing the preservation of heritage elements with the demands of safety, accessibility, and functionality required both creativity and technical precision.

Today, Tapestry Hall stands as a symbol of successful heritage renewal—serving as a gathering place for weddings, corporate functions, and community celebrations.
