Project overview

To address concerns about high-speed traffic and frequent collisions at the intersection of Hyde Park Road and Sunningdale Road West, the City of London undertook a safety and capacity improvement project. The corridor was also experiencing increasing demand due to ongoing development in the area. The chosen solution included widening the roadway and constructing a two-lane roundabout to encourage lower vehicle speeds and enhance intersection safety.

Designed to improve conditions for all road users—not just vehicles—the project incorporated complete streets elements such as sidewalks, street lighting, and in-boulevard bike lanes. These features have significantly enhanced accessibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the roundabout improves traffic efficiency and reduces vehicle emissions by minimizing stop-and-go traffic and idling time, thereby contributing to better air quality.

Beyond traffic and safety improvements, the project also served as an opportunity to modernize infrastructure, enhance stormwater management, and reduce environmental impacts.

MTE's Involvement

MTE was selected as the Prime Consultant for the detailed design and construction phases, based on our experience in roundabout design and transportation infrastructure. Leveraging our expertise in using roadway geometry to influence driver behavior, our team developed a design that both calms traffic and improves operational flow at the intersection.

Key components of our scope included the widening of approach roads, upgrading the rural cross-section to an urban standard, and incorporating storm sewers and stormwater management systems. In place of traditional ditches, the design integrated bioretention cells—a sustainable, low-impact development feature that filters and manages road runoff using natural processes and vegetation.

As part of the preliminary design phase, we carried out geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations to assess soil and groundwater conditions. The findings supported the use of bioretention systems, contributing to the project’s environmental goals.

We also coordinated with telecommunications and utility providers to relocate hydro poles and infrastructure, ensuring minimal disruption to services. Public engagement was a key component of our approach, with a virtual Public Information Centre and regular updates to stakeholders throughout the project.

During construction, MTE provided contract administration and inspection services. The work was staged in two phases to maintain two-way traffic flow and avoid full or partial closures, minimizing disruptions and eliminating the need for detours.

The completed roundabout has successfully calmed traffic and significantly improved the intersection’s functionality and safety.
