Project overview

Located in the heart of the City’s downtown core and open year-round, Hamilton Farmers’ Market offers visitors food, flowers, and artisanal products from over 50 vendors. Established in 1837, the market has been a cherished community staple and has grown into the vibrant tourist and shopping destination it is today.

The building on York Street that houses the market also includes the Hamilton Central Public Library and other commercial spaces, featuring several roof levels. After years of use, the roof and skylight showed signs of deterioration and had reached the end of their lifecycle, making it necessary for the City of Hamilton to undertake their replacement.

MTE's Involvement

With the goal of installing a durable, energy-efficient roof and skylight, our Building Restoration team was engaged to provide engineering services throughout design, tendering, construction review, and contract administration.

This project presented several challenges, including the need to minimize disruption to ongoing business operations and limited site access. Entry was restricted to a single laneway that was also used for shipping and receiving. By carefully scheduling work outside of regular business hours and coordinating closely with the building’s tenants and surrounding organizations, our team completed the project seamlessly without impeding operations. The market remained fully open throughout the entire process.

The upgraded skylight features improved glazing, allowing significantly more natural light into the market. Meanwhile, the new roof system offers a higher thermal resistance rating, enabling the City to better manage heating and cooling needs with enhanced energy efficiency.
