Project overview

The Ferma Carden Quarry, situated on the Carden Plain in the township of Carden, Kawartha Lakes, is located in an area known for its rich deposits of high-quality limestone. This quarry has been identified as the next closest source of limestone in the region, making it a key resource for meeting the growing demand for construction and industrial materials.

The Carden Plain itself is a significant geological area, with unique limestone formations that have attracted attention for their purity and suitability for various commercial applications. As one of the few remaining areas with accessible, high-quality limestone reserves, the Ferma Carden Quarry plays a crucial role in sustaining local industry and supporting regional development.

MTE's Involvement

MTE conducted a hydrogeological Investigation at the site due to the sensitivity of the aquifers on the Carden Plain, which include the Upper and Lower Green Marker Beds. The investigation involved a detailed field program, including drilling new monitoring wells, conducting pumping tests, performing packer tests, and monitoring private wells.

Throughout the fieldwork, MTE held several meetings with the Ministry of the Environment to keep them informed of the quarry’s effects. This collaboration allowed MTE to navigate the political landscape and ultimately present a plan that satisfied the Ministry’s requirements for protecting groundwater and surface water resources. As a result, Ferma Aggregates received approval for a site plan amendment, enabling the quarry to extract limestone to deeper depths while continuing to safeguard the region’s water resources.
