Brantford Police Services Retrofit and Expansion

Project overview

The Brantford Police Service Facility redevelopment and expansion is a significant modernization project designed to enhance the functionality, durability, and long-term performance of the existing building. The project includes the expansion of the current facility to accommodate operational growth while upgrading building systems and exterior assemblies to meet contemporary performance standards.

Architecturally, the project incorporates unitized triple-glazed curtain wall systems, punched window assemblies, and metal panel cladding to improve thermal efficiency, occupant comfort, and overall building durability. A strong emphasis was placed on constructability, sustainability, and resilience, ensuring the building envelope performs effectively under varying environmental conditions while supporting the operational needs of a critical public safety facility.

MTE's Involvement

During construction, MTE’s scope includes reviewing shop drawings, product data sheets, testing reports, and calculations related to the building envelope systems. Our team also reviews site mockups of various envelope assemblies, including the roofing system. Periodic site reviews confirm that installations comply with contract documents and industry best practices, and we witness on-site air and water infiltration testing of glazing systems to verify compliance with project specifications and industry standards.

Working with the architect team, MTE was retained to provide site plan, structural and building envelope consulting services for the redevelopment and expansion of the existing Brantford police service facility. This project includes unitized triple glazed curtain walls, punched windows, and metal panels. Our building envelope consulting team reviewed the design drawings and specifications for the proposed assemblies and details to ensure they reflect the intent of the design the architect prepared and coordinated with our structural team. the review encompassed constructability, compatibility of materials, suggested detailing to improve building performance, air vapor continuity, thermal continuity, and water ingress management.

Having the envelope consultant and structural team within the same office allowed us to discuss detailing and flag locations that would otherwise only be noted during construction. we identified and flagged several locations where steel supports could be reduced. We also flag several locations where the steel should be adjusted to allow for tolerances and curtain wall anchorage. We were able to not only flag to the architectural team but directly to the structural team during the construction phase, our team’s scope includes reviewing shop drawings, including product data sheets, testing reports, and calculations related to the envelope systems. We will be reviewing site mockups of different building envelope assemblies, including the roofing system. periodic site reviews confirmed that the installation of the different envelope systems complied with the contract documents and industry practices. Additionally, we will witness site air and water infiltration testing of the glazing systems to confirm compliance with project specifications and industry standards
