Trafalgar Park Community Centre Redevelopment | Kayam Ramsewak’s Favourite MTE Project

Reflections on Trafalgar Park

At MTE, we take pride in celebrating our history and the people who shape it. With over 50,000 projects completed, each one tells a story of collaboration, innovation, and the trust our clients place in us. From the inception of MTE to the multidisciplinary firm we are today, our journey has been defined by a shared commitment to building better communities—one project at a time.

For Growth Director Kayam, one project stands out as a career highlight: the Trafalgar Park Community Centre redevelopment in Oakville

Why This Project Matters

The Trafalgar Park project holds special meaning for Kayam. Not only was it technically complex and collaborative in nature, but it also brings lasting benefits to the Oakville community—something that resonates deeply with his values as an engineer and Growth leader.

As MTE’s Director of Growth, Kayam leads business development, strategic partnerships, and the integration of marketing and growth initiatives with the firm’s broader goals.

With 25 years of experience in the design of both small- and large-scale developments, he brings deep technical knowledge in servicing, grading, and stormwater management.

Known for fostering high-performing teams and championing cross-disciplinary collaboration, Kayam plays a central role in aligning internal teams, consultant partners, agencies, and stakeholders—ensuring client needs are met with clarity, purpose, and sustainable solutions.

A Community-Centered Redevelopment

The Trafalgar Park Community Centre Project was delivered using an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) model, and MTE provided civil engineering services.

IPD is a collaborative approach that involves all key stakeholders from the beginning of a project, encouraging transparency, shared risk, and joint decision-making. By bringing architects, engineers, contractors, and owners together early on, this model ensures that everyone is on the same page, resulting in faster delivery times, fewer mistakes, and reduced costs.  This approach encouraged early and ongoing collaboration between all team members, enabling creative problem-solving, efficient design execution, and a shared focus on community outcomes.

At the heart of the project was the redevelopment and expansion of the historic Oakville Arena, originally built in 1951. A key design objective was to preserve the arena’s original wood truss roof—a designated heritage feature—which was carefully restored and integrated into the new structure.

Today, the revitalized community centre includes:

  • An NHL-sized ice pad
  • A two-bay garage
  • A seniors’ centre
  • Public meeting rooms
  • A full-sized gymnasium
  • An indoor walking track
  • Exterior washroom facilities
  • Electric vehicle charging stations
  • Refrigerated outdoor ice rink

The project also features a brand-new two-storey fire hall on the adjacent property, adding infrastructure to support emergency services in the area.

A Lasting Legacy

For Kayam, the Trafalgar Park project is a proud example of what MTE strives for on every project: technical excellence, meaningful community impact, and seamless collaboration from start to finish.

As we continue to grow and evolve as a firm, it’s projects like these—and the passionate people behind them—that remind us why we do what we do.
