MTE Consultants Acquires RIZZ Engineering, Strengthening Expertise in Structural Design and Precast Concrete

12 Days of Christmas: 2 Soil Samples

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me … two soil samples!

What is geotechnical engineering ?

Geotechnical engineering is the science of understanding soil, rock, and groundwater conditions to assess how they impact construction. By conducting fieldwork, such as drilling boreholes and setting up test pits, they gather data on the earth’s materials to ensure each project is stable, safe, and sustainable.

Our team of Geotechnical engineering specialists provide solutions essential for building and developing safe and durable structures in various sectors, including commercial, industrial, residential, and municipal projects.

Without a Geotechnical engineer, foundations could be compromised, soil conditions might go unchecked, and construction could face unexpected risks, leading to costly delays, structural failures, or even safety hazards. That’s why our Geotechnical team is crucial—they’re the foundation of every great project!

Here are two standout projects that highlight the exceptional work of our geotechnical team:

Amazon St Thomas Warehouse exterior

Amazon Distribution Warehouse, St. Thomas

Situated in St Thomas, Ontario, this new Amazon Robotics Sortation Centre features a surface area of approximately 2.8 million square-feet over 4 storeys, with a ground floor of roughly 700,000 sq. ft, and approximately 120,000 sf of mezzanine space.

MTE completed a Geotechnical Investigation which included excess soil sampling analysis and onsite materials testing of soil, concrete and asphalt. This included soil samples at 0.75 to 1.5 m depth intervals with SPT and pocket penetrometer testing, as well as geotechnical laboratory testing including moisture content testing on all samples and eight particle size distribution analyses.

Angstrom Engineering Headquarters

When Angstrom Engineering, an international nanotechnology company embarked on plans to build their new headquarters in Cambridge, our team supported the development with engineering and environmental expertise.

Our Geotechnical engineers and hydrogeology team joined the project to assess the soil and groundwater conditions of the property and provide recommendations to guide the site design.
