Project overview

The City of Kitchener has approved the development of a premier indoor recreation facility at RBJ Schlegel Park, setting the stage for a transformative community asset. The 198,000 square-foot, Net Zero building will feature an aquatic center, a FIFA-sized field house, an elevated walking track, a cricket batting practice lane, a lobby and viewing area, universal changerooms, flexible multipurpose community rooms, and numerous other support spaces. 

This facility will meet the diverse recreational needs of the community while setting a new benchmark for sustainability in Canada. With a goal of achieving certification under the Zero Carbon Building Standard v3, it aims to become one of the country’s first recreation centers to meet this ambitious environmental standard. 

This project represents a first for the City of Kitchener, marking a milestone with the implementation of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). IPD is a collaborative approach that unites people, systems, and processes to maximize efficiency, minimize waste, and optimize outcomes throughout the design, fabrication, and construction phases. 

MTE's Involvement

MTE is proud to have provided structural engineering services utilizing the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) approach. 

As the Structural Lead/Senior Structural Engineer firm, MTE actively participated in “Big Room” meetings and supported day-to-day operations, collaborating closely with the design group and IPD teams to explore and implement innovative structural solutions throughout both the project validation and construction phases. Our structural team also led the technical support staff in the creation of structural design and construction documents. Jeff served as the Structural Pit Captain for the IPD team, overseeing the structural aspects throughout the project’s duration.
