Project overview

Located in Puslinch, Ontario, the McMillan Pit was formerly operated as a Class A Licensed Aggregate Pit. Since its closure in 2002, the site has been undergoing rehabilitation and ecological restoration led by CBM Aggregates.

In 2024, MTE Consultants were engaged to conduct an ecological assessment of the site. The goal was to evaluate current environmental conditions, measure the progress of rehabilitation efforts using tools such as the Society for Ecological Restoration’s Recovery Wheel, and assess the overall recovery status of the landscape.

MTE's Involvement

MTE was proud to support the ongoing restoration of the McMillan Pit by delivering specialized environmental science services.

Throughout the year, MTE conducted a series of ecological surveys to document biodiversity and inform the site’s Existing Conditions Report. These included two seasonal plant inventories, turtle basking and nesting surveys, reptile emergence monitoring, two breeding bird surveys, and three amphibian breeding surveys.

Based on the collected data, MTE provided a range of recommendations to enhance ecological outcomes. These included invasive species management strategies, the installation of wildlife habitat features such as basking logs and bat boxes, and the implementation of ongoing ecological monitoring to support long-term restoration success.
