Project Overview

After years of planning, Hamilton Urban Core Community Health Centre will soon be moving into a new purpose-built location in Hamilton’s downtown core. The long-standing, non-profit health facility has been a fixture on Rebecca Street for some time, providing accessible health and well-being services with a focus on addressing health inequities.

The agency’s former location was in need of repairs and was not well-suited for a health centre. Built to meet their specific needs, the new facility will feature a people-focused design and offer a multitude of programming under one roof. From mental health counselling, dental and chiropody, to increased access to physicians and nurse practitioners, the new building will allow the agency to increase the number of clients they serve by 15 per cent.

MTE’s Involvement

Our civil engineering team was engaged to lay the groundwork for the infrastructure that would support the new location on Canon Street East, which was previously occupied by an unused single-storey building. With the former structure demolished, our team got to work completing a topographic survey of the site,  which supported the team’s design of  the site’s grading, servicing and stormwater management requirements.

Our structural engineers were entrusted to design the two-storey structure that uses a combination of structural steel bracing and reinforced concrete shear walls for lateral stability. Equipped with an accessible entrance, the facility is being designed to offer a variety of spaces for medical examinations, counselling and support groups. The second floor of the facility will boast a vibrant community courtyard and is cantilevered 12 feet over the parking lot’s sidewalk.

Ground has been broken and our team will be completing inspections throughout construction. We are proud to have a hand in bringing this essential facility to the community and are excited to see the impact it will have in Hamilton.
