MTE's Involvement
The sewer forms part of the Intermarket Road construction—a new four-lane collector road designed to service a significant drainage area and support growth within Waterloo Region’s East Side lands.
One of the key challenges was the presence of shallow groundwater under artesian pressure near the Freeport Creek crossing. To address this, a trenchless solution was implemented, involving the installation of a 200-metre section of pipe using microtunnelling techniques. The remaining 750 metres of sewer were installed using traditional open-cut excavation, with pipe depths ranging from 10 to 15 metres.
This innovative approach to deep sewer installation earned the project Project of the Year from the Centre for Advancement of Trenchless Technologies (CATT) at the 2021 CATT Awards of Excellence—recognizing our team’s technical expertise and commitment to sustainable infrastructure solutions.
