Project overview

MTE was engaged by HH Angus and an Italian energy firm, AB Energy International, to design a biogas cogeneration plant in Mazeppa, Alberta. MTE acted in the role of a prime consultant and lead structural, architectural, and civil disciplines.

The project involved a 12,500 ft2 building to house five (5) 4.0 MW gas-powered generators.  MTE completed the design of a power generation facility to house the string of engines and generators, including the foundation, and structural support for stacks, cooling equipment, pipe racks, and miscellaneous M&E equipment.

MTE's Involvement

Our team designed the prefabricated steel building structure, developed design of all connecting details, developed light gauge insulated panels and how it is connected to the main structure. The structure and the building envelope were designed by our team, manufactured in Italy, shipped to Canada, and assembled in Alberta.

Challenges of the project included: very tight construction tolerances, due to pre-engineered design that required precise concrete foundations; poor soil conditions, for which we placed the entire building including the slab and all equipment on deep caissons to provide the proper foundation for the equipment and structural frame.

We also coordinated with a client group based in Italy and performed contract administration and construction review at an out-of-province construction site.  Our efforts helped the project to be completed to the owner’s satisfaction, within the expected budget and schedule.
