MTE's Involvement
MTE was retained by the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) to conduct a comprehensive condition survey of all expansion joints in the Terminal 1 parking garage, as well as to design repairs and new drainage systems for these joints. Acting as the Prime Consultant, MTE collaborated with HH Angus & Associates Limited (HHA), who provided mechanical engineering services as a subconsultant. The repair work was successfully completed in 2015.
Our team carried out a detailed visual inspection of all expansion joints, organizing the necessary Groundside Activity Notices and FAPs. We thoroughly examined all plates and visible hardware, identifying and quantifying any deficiencies. To gain further insight, we engaged a contractor to remove cover plates from select joints, allowing us to inspect the interior. This revealed that the joints were filled with water, and many bearing bars were significantly corroded.
In response to these findings, MTE designed drainage systems for all joints, strategically positioning them to minimize the number of pipes crossing drive aisles in order to maintain proper vehicle clearances. We also specified new bearing bars and designed new cover plates. Throughout the process, MTE provided regular site visits to oversee construction progress. Our Structural Team performed contract administration duties, including schedule monitoring, handling RFIs and change orders, and reviewing contractor progress payments. The successful collaboration among all consultants, contractors, and the GTAA ensured the project was completed within the anticipated timeframe.
